Hot tub water care sounds complicated, but it comes down to keeping five numbers in range and testing often enough to catch them before they drift. 1. Start with your test reading

Everything downstream depends on an accurate reading, and test strips are easy to misread — dipped too long, held sideways, or compared under bad lighting. The single most common cause of “my chemicals aren’t working” is a reading that was wrong to begin with.

Dip once, hold level, don’t shake off the water, and read against the bottle in daylight within the time the label specifies. 2. Sanitizer: chlorine or bromine

Your sanitizer is the one number you can never let hit zero — it’s what actually keeps the water safe. Most spa owners use either chlorine (3–5 ppm) or bromine (4–6 ppm). Chlorine is cheaper and acts fast; bromine is more stable in hot water and easier on people who find chlorine harsh, but it costs more and works more slowly.

3. pH and alkalinity (fix these together)

pH measures how acidic or basic your water is, and hot tubs push it upward relentlessly — every time the jets churn the surface, carbon dioxide escapes and pH climbs. High pH weakens your sanitizer, clouds the water, and scales your heater; low pH corrodes metal parts. The target is a narrow 7.4–7.6.

The catch is that pH and total alkalinity (target 80–100 ppm) are coupled — alkalinity is the buffer that decides how fast pH drifts. Undershoot on purpose. Whenever you’re adding acid or sanitizer, add a little less than you think, wait, and retest. It’s always easier to add a second small dose than to rescue water you’ve overcorrected.

4. Calcium hardness

Calcium hardness (150–250 ppm) is the number people forget until it causes damage. Too low and the water pulls calcium from wherever it can — etching plaster, corroding metal, and, on some tubs, degrading seals. Too high and calcium drops out as chalky scale on the shell and heater. It moves slowly, so a monthly check is plenty — but don’t skip it, because the fix for water that’s already scaled is a full drain and refill. 5. Cyanuric acid (chlorine users, outdoors)

Cyanuric acid (CYA) is a stabilizer that protects chlorine from being burned off by sunlight. Outdoors it helps; but it accumulates every time you use stabilized (“dichlor”) chlorine tablets or granules, and above about 30 ppm it starts slowing the chlorine you’re trying to help. If your chlorine reads fine but the water still isn’t clean, creeping CYA is a prime suspect. The only way down is dilution — a partial drain and refill. Bromine users can ignore this entirely.

When the water still isn’t right

Cloudy, foamy, or smelly water is a symptom, not a diagnosis — and the fixes work in a specific order. Ninety percent of cloudy spa water traces back to one of three things: low sanitizer, high pH, or a filter that needs cleaning. A simple weekly routine

Put together, hot tub water care is really just a rhythm:

  1. Every 2–3 days: test sanitizer and pH; top up sanitizer if it’s dipping.
  2. Weekly: check alkalinity, add sanitizer as needed, and shock the water to clear out the stuff your test strip can’t see.
  3. Monthly: test calcium hardness and (if you’re on chlorine outdoors) cyanuric acid; rinse the filter.
  4. Every 3–4 months: drain, clean, and refill — fresh water resets everything that slowly accumulates.
