Total alkalinity (TA) is the least glamorous reading on your test strip and the one most people skip — right up until they spend a month chasing pH in circles. Alkalinity is pH’s shock absorber: it soaks up the acids and bases that constantly hit spa water so that pH moves slowly instead of lurching. When TA is right, pH mostly manages itself. When it’s wrong, no amount of pH chemical will make the number stick.

The short version: keep total alkalinity at 80–100 ppm. Raise it with alkalinity increaser (plain sodium bicarbonate — baking soda). Lower it with pH decreaser (dry acid) followed by an aeration cycle to let pH recover. And always fix alkalinity before you fine-tune pH — never the other way around.

What total alkalinity actually is

Despite the similar name, alkalinity is not pH. pH measures how acidic or basic the water is right now; total alkalinity measures the water’s capacity to resist changes in pH — the concentration of dissolved bicarbonates that neutralize acid before it can move the needle. Chemists call this buffering.

A useful mental model: pH is the ball, alkalinity is how deep the bowl is. With a deep bowl (TA in range), the ball wobbles when something knocks it but settles back to center. With a shallow bowl (low TA), the same knock sends the ball flying. Sanitizer doses, a busy soak night, rainwater, topping off with tap water — all of these “knock the ball,” every week, forever. Alkalinity decides whether that matters.

The target: 80–100 ppm

For hot tubs, aim for 80–100 ppm. You’ll see 80–120 quoted for pools, and that’s fine for a pool — but a spa is a few hundred gallons of hot, heavily-jetted water, and that aeration constantly pushes pH upward. Running TA at the lower, tighter band keeps that upward drift manageable. Low alkalinity: the pH roller coaster

Below about 80 ppm, the buffer is too thin to do its job. The signature symptom is pH that won’t hold still — it reads 7.6 today, 7.0 on Thursday, and every correction seems to overshoot. Left low for weeks, acidic swings start to etch heater elements, pump seals, and shell surfaces, which is why persistent low pH and low TA so often show up as a pair.

To raise it: add alkalinity increaser, which is simply sodium bicarbonate — the same compound as the baking soda in your pantry. It raises TA reliably and nudges pH up only slightly, which is exactly the behavior you want. As a rough guide, about 1 tablespoon per 100 gallons raises TA roughly 10 ppm — so a 300-gallon spa that reads 60 ppm needs on the order of 6–9 tablespoons to reach the low end of range. Dose, run the jets for an hour, and retest before adding more.

High alkalinity: pH that only goes up

Above about 120 ppm, the buffer is too thick — and it’s biased upward. The signature symptom is pH that climbs relentlessly no matter how often you knock it down, often alongside scale deposits and stubborn high pH. High TA usually comes straight from your fill water (common in hard-water regions) or from overshooting with baking soda.

To lower it: this is the one adjustment with a genuine technique to it, because dry acid (pH decreaser) lowers both TA and pH — there’s no chemical that lowers alkalinity alone. The trick is aeration:

  1. Dose dry acid per its label to bring pH down to around 7.0. This drags TA down with it.
  2. Aerate: run the jets on high with the cover off for 30–60 minutes. Aeration off-gasses carbon dioxide, which raises pH only — alkalinity stays where the acid left it.
  3. Retest. pH should be recovering toward 7.4–7.6 while TA reads lower than before. Repeat the cycle until TA lands in 80–100.

Expect this to take two or three rounds over a couple of days for a big correction. That’s normal — trying to do it in one heavy acid dose just crashes pH and stresses the water.

Always fix alkalinity before pH

This ordering rule saves more frustration than any other habit in spa care. Because TA controls how pH behaves, any pH adjustment you make while TA is out of range is written in sand — the water will drift right back. Balance TA into 80–100 first, give the water a day of normal jet use to settle, and then fine-tune pH if it still needs it. Half the time it won’t.

Topping off? Test after. Every few inches of fresh tap water shifts TA toward whatever your tap reads — high in hard-water areas, low in soft. A quick strip after a top-off catches the drift before pH starts wandering, and a twice-a-week testing habit catches everything else.
