Calcium hardness (CH) measures the dissolved calcium in your spa water. Unlike sanitizer and pH, it doesn’t swing day to day — which is exactly why it gets ignored. But water has a strong opinion about calcium: if it doesn’t have enough, it takes it from whatever it touches — heater elements, pump seals, shell surfaces. If it has too much, it hands it back as scale. Your job is to keep the water satisfied so it leaves your equipment alone.
The short version: keep calcium hardness at 150–250 ppm. Raise it with calcium hardness increaser (calcium chloride). Lowering it is dilution-only — no chemical removes calcium — so the real skill is not overshooting, and knowing what your tap water brings to the party.
Low hardness: aggressive water
Below about 100 ppm, water is under-saturated and “hungry.” The consequences show up on two timescales:
- Immediately: foam. Soft water holds bubbles far more readily — it’s the same reason soap lathers luxuriously in soft water. If your spa foams at the slightest excuse and hardness reads low, you’ve likely found the cause.
- Over months: corrosion. Calcium-hungry water slowly etches metal heater elements, eats pump seals, and dulls acrylic. None of it is visible until something starts leaking or the heater fails — low hardness is a maintenance bill on a delay.
To raise it: calcium hardness increaser is calcium chloride. Pre-dissolve it in a bucket of spa water (it gets hot as it dissolves — that’s normal), pour it in with the jets running, and retest after a few hours. Work up in stages: it’s trivially easy to add and, as you’re about to read, effectively impossible to subtract.
High hardness: scale
Above about 400 ppm, hot water starts handing calcium back as scale — the white, crusty carbonate deposits you’ll spot first as a rough waterline ring. The deposits you can’t see matter more: scale on the heater element insulates it (making heating slower and more expensive until the element burns out) and narrows plumbing from the inside. High CH plus high pH is also a classic recipe for stubbornly cloudy water, as calcium comes out of solution as fine suspended particles.
To lower it: here’s the honest part — no spa chemical removes dissolved calcium. Your options:
- Dilute. Partially drain (a third to a half) and refill with softer water. If your spa was due for a full drain anyway, that’s the cleaner reset.
- Filter the fill. In hard-water regions, an inexpensive hose-end filter at refill time reduces the calcium you start with — much easier than fighting it afterward.
- Hold it in solution. A scale-control (sequestrant) product doesn’t lower the number, but it binds calcium so it can’t precipitate as scale — a legitimate bridge until your next drain, not a cure.

It all starts with your tap
Your fill water decides which side of this problem you live on, so test the hose water once — dip a test strip in a glass straight from the tap. (Heads up: most strips read total hardness, calcium plus magnesium, which sits a little above the pure-calcium number this target is based on — why that gap matters here.)
- Soft-water regions (or municipal soft water): you’ll fill low and dose calcium up once per fill. Budget it into every refill.
- Hard-water regions: you may fill already at or above range — that’s when the hose-end filter earns its keep.
- Water-softener households: don’t fill straight from a softened line. Softener output reads near 0 ppm and is exactly the aggressive water that eats heaters. Blend with unsoftened water, or fill soft and dose up immediately.
After the initial fill is set, CH only needs a check about monthly — it drifts slowly via top-offs and splash-out, nothing like the daily dance of sanitizer and pH.
