“Shock” sounds dramatic, but all it means is adding a large oxidizing dose to the water — enough to burn through the sweat, body oils, lotions, and used-up sanitizer byproducts that regular dosing can’t keep up with. A hot tub is a small volume of hot water shared by whole bodies at a time; without a periodic deep-clean at the chemical level, that invisible load builds up until the water turns cloudy, foamy, or smelly.
The short version: shock once a week and after any heavy-use soak. Chlorine spas use dichlor granules (or plain liquid chlorine once CYA is topped up); bromine spas use non-chlorine MPS shock to reactivate the bromide bank. What shocking actually does
Your day-to-day sanitizer works retail: it attacks bacteria and organics one molecule at a time as they appear. But some of it gets “used up” in the process — with chlorine, the spent form is called chloramines (combined chlorine), which sanitize poorly and give off that sharp swimming-pool smell. Meanwhile oils and lotions accumulate faster than a maintenance dose can oxidize them.
A shock dose is wholesale: it floods the water with enough oxidizer to break down the accumulated organics and burn off the spent chloramines in one pass. The result is water that smells like nothing, sparkles instead of hazing, and lets your regular sanitizer dose go back to working efficiently. Skipping shock is the single most common reason a well-dosed spa still drifts toward dull, smelly water.
When to shock
- Weekly, as routine — same day each week makes it stick.
- After heavy use: several bathers, a long session, or a party. A rule of thumb: four people for 30 minutes adds roughly the contaminant load of a week of solo soaks.
- When water misbehaves: cloudiness, foam, or a chemical smell are all signs the oxidizer has fallen behind.
- After a fresh fill, once the water is balanced, to establish a clean baseline.
Which shock: chlorine spas
You have two good options, and the difference is worth understanding:
- Dichlor granules — the standard spa shock. Dissolves fast, pH-neutral, easy to dose. The catch: every dose of dichlor also adds cyanuric acid (CYA), a stabilizer that builds up and never leaves except by draining. Past about 30 ppm CYA, chlorine gets measurably slower at its job in a hot spa. Fine for months of use, but it’s why old water gets harder to keep clear.
- Unstabilized chlorine (plain liquid chlorine / bleach) — adds no CYA at all. Once your CYA is around 30 ppm from initial dichlor use, switching your shock to unstabilized chlorine keeps the stabilizer from creeping higher and stretches the life of your fill.
Either way, a typical shock targets roughly 10 ppm of free chlorine — about double to triple your normal 3–5 ppm maintenance band. The exact grams or ounces depend on your spa’s volume and your product’s strength, which is precisely the math nobody enjoys doing at the side of a hot tub.
Which shock: bromine spas
Bromine systems keep a reserve of bromide ions in the water — a “bromide bank.” Shocking a bromine spa with MPS (non-chlorine shock) does double duty: it oxidizes the accumulated gunk and converts spent bromide back into active bromine sanitizer. It’s the standard choice. Chlorine shock also works in a bromine spa (it reactivates bromide the same way), but MPS is gentler on the water balance and lets you soak again sooner. How to shock, step by step
- Test first. Check pH is in the 7.4–7.6 band — chlorine oxidizes dramatically better at proper pH, so shocking into high-pH water wastes half the dose.
- Jets on, cover off. Circulation spreads the dose; open air lets the oxidized byproducts gas off instead of condensing under the cover.
- Add the shock to the water (never the other way around for any concentrated chemical), ideally in the evening — sunlight burns off unstabilized chlorine quickly.
- Run jets 20–30 minutes uncovered, then cover as usual.
- Retest before the next soak. With chlorine shock, wait until free chlorine is back at or below 5 ppm — usually several hours to overnight. With MPS, most labels clear you to soak after 15–20 minutes.
The smell myth, one more time
A hot tub that reeks of “chlorine” almost never has too much chlorine — that smell is chloramines, the spent form, which means the water needs more oxidizer, not less.
