Foam is different from cloudy water, even though they often show up together. Cloudiness is fine particles suspended in the water; foam is surfactants — soap-like compounds that lower water’s surface tension — getting whipped into bubbles by the jets. A little foam that pops within a minute of the jets shutting off is normal in any spa. A thick, sudsy layer that lingers is your water telling you something specific.
To get rid of foaming fast: rinse swimsuits in plain water (detergent residue is the #1 cause), shower off lotion and sunscreen before soaking, check calcium hardness is 150–250 ppm, and shock the water if sanitizer is low. A defoamer clears an existing layer for tonight, but the steps below are what stop it coming back.
Work through these causes in order. Most foam problems are solved by step 1.
Step 1: Rule out residue first
This is the most common cause by far, and it has nothing to do with your chemical balance. Surfactants get into spa water from:
- Laundry detergent left in swimsuits. Detergent residue rinses out of fabric in hot, agitated water and foams instantly. Rinse suits in plain water after washing, or use a detergent-free rinse.
- Body lotion, sunscreen, deodorant, and hairspray on skin and hair. A quick rinse-off shower before soaking removes most of it.
- Shampoo or bath products if the spa doubles as a bath for kids or pets.
If foam shows up during or right after a soak and settles down between uses, this is almost certainly your answer — no chemical fix needed, just a rinse-before-you-soak habit.
Step 2: Check calcium hardness and TDS
Water that’s low in calcium hardness (below 100 ppm) is called “aggressive” — it’s chemically hungry and holds foam more readily. Test with a test strip and aim for 150–250 ppm; a calcium hardness increaser brings it up if it’s low (our calcium hardness guide covers the dosing and your fill water’s role). This is also why a spa often foams for its first few days after a fresh fill: tap water starts low in hardness until you dose it up, so a little startup foam right after filling is normal.
On the other end, old water that’s accumulated dissolved solids (TDS) from months of chemicals, sweat, and oils holds foam more easily too — the water is simply saturated and can’t dissolve anything else cleanly. If your spa is more than a few months past its last drain, that’s a strong suspect.
Step 3: Check sanitizer and shock the water
Foam itself isn’t dangerous, but it’s often a sign sanitizer is being consumed faster than normal — by all that body oil and lotion residue — while organics build up underneath. Test sanitizer and pH to confirm they’re still in range, then shock the water if sanitizer reads low:
- Chlorine spas: dichlor granules, or unstabilized chlorine if CYA is already 30 ppm or higher.
- Bromine spas: MPS (non-chlorine shock) reactivates the bromide bank.
Run the jets with the cover off for 20–30 minutes after shocking — this also helps beat down existing foam by letting it dissipate into open air instead of trapping under the cover.
A common myth worth clearing up: too much chlorine does not cause foam. It’s the opposite — foam is surfactant residue that low sanitizer isn’t breaking down fast enough, so raising chlorine with a shock treatment actually helps knock it out.
Foam is a chemistry symptom

Step 4: Consider your sanitizer system
Some sanitizer systems foam more readily than others by design. Non-chlorine “natural” or enzyme-based products, and mineral cartridge systems running at lower chlorine/bromine levels, tend to foam more because there’s less oxidizer actively breaking down oils. This isn’t a malfunction — it just means steps 1–3 matter more for you than they do for a spa running standard chlorine at full strength. Step 5: Use a defoamer as a stopgap, not a fix
A hot tub defoamer (anti-foam) breaks the surface tension of existing bubbles almost instantly, which is genuinely useful before guests arrive. But it doesn’t remove the surfactants causing the foam — it just suppresses the symptom for a day or so. Use it to get through tonight’s soak, then still work through steps 1–4 or the foam will be back tomorrow.
When to give up and drain
If you’ve rinsed swimsuits, showered before soaking, balanced calcium hardness, and shocked the water — and it still foams easily — the water itself is worn out. Dissolved solids build up over months and no chemical removes them.
