If your test strip keeps showing pH below 7.4, the water is drifting acidic — the opposite problem from the more common high-pH drift, but just as worth fixing. Low pH stings skin and eyes, corrodes metal parts, and throws off how well your sanitizer works. The good news is that raising pH is a quick, controllable fix once you know what to add and how much.

Why hot tub pH drops low

Unlike high pH, which is baked into how spas work, low pH usually has an identifiable cause. The most common one is total alkalinity that's too low to buffer pH — without enough alkalinity acting as a cushion, pH swings with every chemical dose instead of holding steady. Beyond that, a few things reliably push pH down:

If pH is low but alkalinity reads fine, it's usually a one-time overcorrection or dilution — a straight pH increaser dose fixes it. If both are low, alkalinity is almost always the root cause, and it's worth fixing first (more on that below).

What to add: pH increaser

“pH Up” or “pH increaser” for spas is almost always sodium carbonate, also called soda ash. It raises pH directly with only a small effect on alkalinity. That's different from baking soda (sodium bicarbonate), which is sold as an alkalinity increaser — it raises pH only gently as a side effect of raising alkalinity. Reach for soda ash when pH alone is low; reach for baking soda when alkalinity is low too (see below).

How much to add

The dose depends on how far below target you are and how much water your spa holds. Most hot tubs hold 300–500 gallons — check your manual rather than guessing, since being off by 100 gallons throws off every dose you add afterward.

As a working rule of thumb, in a typical 400-gallon spa, roughly a quarter ounce of soda ash raises pH about 0.2 — for example from 7.0 up to the 7.2–7.4 range on the way to the 7.4–7.6 target. Scale proportionally for your spa’s size, and always defer to your product label if it differs.

  1. Run the jets on low so the water is circulating.
  2. Pre-dissolve the granules in a bucket of spa water (never the other way around — always add chemical to water).
  3. Pour the solution slowly around the spa’s perimeter.
  4. Leave the cover off and jets running for 15–20 minutes.
  5. Retest after 30 minutes before even thinking about a second dose.
Undershoot on purpose. It’s much easier to add a second small dose than to walk back an overshoot — pushing pH past 7.6 just trades one problem (low pH) for the other (high pH), and you end up chasing it back down.

If pH keeps dropping back: check alkalinity first

If you raise pH and it sinks again within days, your total alkalinity is almost certainly below the spa-friendly range. Alkalinity is what keeps pH from swinging in either direction, so low alkalinity means every dose — even sanitizer — can knock pH off course. Conveniently, baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) raises both alkalinity and pH at once. If both are low, dose for alkalinity first, then let pH settle over a day or two of normal jet use before fine-tuning it separately with soda ash if it's still short. Don’t try to nail both numbers in one afternoon — stacking doses back-to-back is how people overshoot both.

What low pH is quietly doing

pH below 7.2 becomes corrosive to spa equipment — heater elements, pump seals, and metal trim take the damage over time, which is a more expensive problem than the low reading itself. It's also uncomfortable to soak in: low pH is what causes the stinging, dry-skin feeling people usually blame on chlorine. And because pH affects how active your sanitizer is, water that's been low-pH for a while may not have been sanitizing as reliably as the test strip suggested.
